ROMAN HOLIDAY
Hello again!
In school, holidays were always special. I sooo looked forward to breaking for the weekend, or summers or Diwali. But there’s something super-special when a holiday comes your way unexpectedly…it’s delicious in its spontaneity…really yummy!
We were to shoot this fortnight for ‘Once Upon A Time in Mumbai’ this month, and the schedule got cancelled unexpectedly, leaving me with a stretch of fifteen days completely free. So I decided to make the most of this and seek some adventure!
I travelled to Italy. A first.
Alone. No assistants, colleagues, friends or family. Another first!
Italy’s a place I’ve always wanted to visit… and I was not disappointed…ancient culture, amazing art, fabulous food, lovely people, and lyrical language…I certainly did fall in love - with the place itself.
And it was amazing to travel alone… I began in this industry when I was very young, and have never travelled alone. I always wondered what I would do if I was completely alone. I was delighted at my own contentment… I ate good food, visited beautiful places, fell in love with Michelangelo’s art, made wishes throwing coins in the fountain. I loved the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael, by far my favorites. The ‘Last Supper’ is such an exquisite piece of art…I could look at it forever.
The Italians were very nice. The lighthearted and earnest flirting of young single Italian guys, calling me princess and asking me to marry them…some in French, because they thought I was from France, made me laugh! And I was touched by people’s easy helpfulness - strangers clicked my picture for me or attended to me at hotel receptions or called a cab for me or helped me carry my very heavy suitcases! Strangers were friends and companions and I felt like we connected in a very spiritual way, even though I didn’t know their names. People were so polite and humble, that Italy became the most beautiful thing I have ever experienced.
I loved Rome, and I loved the Vatican too. Venice surprisingly I did not enjoy…sorry all you Venice lovers! Perhaps I have too much of the mountains in me.
And the fashion! Ooooooooooooooooh…Milan is really such a dream for any fashionista. It’s no secret I love clothes. One of the craziest things I did when I was not wealthy at all, soon after my film GANGSTER, was to buy a dress that I paid so much for that I had no money left at all…not even to put dinner on my table…and I never regretted it! So you can imagine my delight at being in Milan, which really does deserve its title as a fashion capital. I had the most fun shopping in Milan.
Now I’m back in the city. But will be away again soon on a shoot. ‘Kites’ is complete, and I’ve heard it’s looking really good. I’ve also begun work on ‘No Problem’, ‘Tanu weds Manu’, and have three additional films in the pipeline - each of these is a different genre from anything I have done before. So it does feel like a time of many firsts…my first comedy, first romantic comedy, first thriller and so on! Exciting!

I believe often we have a different image of people from what we hear or see of them in movies but after that appearance of yours on dkd i realised you are every much just a normal young girl like us. wow! so u took a holiday all alone? how did it feel to be by yourself? You know i’ve also done this at times and its sheer bliss. few years ago for work i used to travel a lot t different countries on work & on weekends would just take off by myself…see some places & then sit in a park reading a book. enchanting! now i have a 10 month old baby - so no chance of me doing anything alone..and i dont mind it either.

I wanted to ask u something. Even though, I hardly watch movies, I have seen some of ur pics in Hyderabad, where you have attended various functions/audio release programs, etc. And I have noticed that you are looking damn serious in most of them. Unlike in these pics, I have hardly seen you smile in Hyd. I bet one of the reasons must be due to the alien language & environment. And if that is the only reason, then its fine.

when i first saw gangster and esp. in woh lamhe, i was just stunned by your fearless, uninhibited perfomance. you, along with shiney really took me to a journey.. it was so different and unique and unconventional, i was just blown away. i was telling everybody that “there is this new chick in bollywood thats gonna blow everyone away” and i’d be like,
“you HAVE to watch.. you HAVE to watch her.”
i dont think bollywood has seen anything quite like you. and i love you because you’re not like every other boring, too-trained, too politically correct, too uptight, too uughh actresses that bollywood seems to be producing like they’re a dime a dozen. keep doing what you’re doing, kangna and i’ll always eagerly await your new releases.. i wish you all the best best best of luck and happiness. you deserve it, gorgeous.
p.s. : KUDOS for being soo darn brave and travelling to italy all alone.. i sooo wanna got there too but i need to make some serios $$$$ first. haha

You have explained Italians or I will say most of the Europeans perfectly. They will go to any limits to help you even if you are a stranger. I think the best thing about Europe is its people. You hardly find this gesture back there in India.
Coming to Venice, you should have never put that place in your itinerary if you are travelling alone. This is one place you need a partner. Thats the place where you should hold hands, talk life, hop on to Gondola and feel the romance in the air. So next time you travel to Venice, don’t travel alone
Lastly, I will like to be candid, about your shades. Being in Italy, you could have opted for better ones. There is not a single soul in Italy without shades. You could have picked some hints. But honestly I didn’t really like yours

I am passionate about Hindi cinema but more into the golden era - late 40s to early 60s. From the little that I see of contemporary mainstream movies on TV, I usually find them glitzy and soulless. Thenl, I happened to see Gangster somehow a few days back. The movie was ok enough, but you were out of this world. Simply fabulous! I really think (right now at least) that the Hindi film industry has not had an actress of your calibre ever. Your expressions, the way you say your dialogues … totally different. You have this very rare ability to make the spectator feel your plight, your pain. The last I felt this way was about Bette Davis. I really, really hope you do well. Would like to see much more of you. But not too much … too much of a good thing .. is not good :-). After watching you in Dus Ka Dum I also think you are a thinking person. One not easily satisfied. Perhaps a little later you should take up direction, and then go on to make your own movies. A female Amir Khan. You have the potential.
